Another Missed Eclipse
Well, there was an eclipse last night. The second in a couple of weeks. And I missed it because of the snow – and because it occurred at an ungodly hour. However, there is always appropriate eclipse music! Nightwish was commissioned to write “Sleeping Sun” for the 1999 solar eclipse that was seen across Europe. The composer, Tuomas Holopainen, was pressured into writing the song for the band’s German record label, because the band was doing so well in that country and the label wanted to release something special just for the German market.
This video is the original, featuring then-vocalist Tarja Turunen in Lapland, where she was eaten alive by mosquitoes during the shoot.
In 2005, Tarja re-recorded the vocals and the band made a new video for the song.
I like both versions, but I do prefer the original sound. I just don’t get the bathtub thingy in the first video.
As I am fond of saying, there is a Nightwish song for every occasion!
